United Soccer Leagues announced the W-League Team of the Week today, with the New York Magic’s Rashida Sherman being named Player of the Week. The pacey New York forward tormented the Garden State last week, scoring two against the New Jersey Valkyries and adding another against the New Jersey Rangers. Sherman’s two-goal effort against the Valkyries included the game-winning goal.
“Rashida is the complete package,” Magic Head Coach Nino DePasquali said. “No forward has more effect every week. She is there with a chance to score every week and this is created by her speed.”
Other W-League players found the net in bunches last week as well. Emily Kittelson of Hampton Roads scored a hat trick and added an assist against Northern Virginia. Melissa Tancredi scored twice, including the game winner, against Santa Clarita and added another against Pali. Laura Greene of Long Island also found the net twice against the New Jersey Valkyries.
Megan Tomlinson scored a big goal for Atlanta against rival Tampa Bay, netting the match’s game-winning goal. Janel Schmitt of Charlotte scored a game winner as well versus Atlanta. Luik Aivi of Ottawa scored a game-tying goal against Canadian rival Quebec City, and Ria Percival helped even things for her team as she assisted on the game-tying goal and played standout defense for Ottawa.
Kika Toulouse put in a solid defensive effort for Washington and assisted on a goal, while Allysha Chapman of Toronto helped contain the Hamilton attack and scored a goal.
Also leading her team’s defense was Vancouver’s Stephanie Panozzo. In two games last week Panozzo made 13 saves and collected two wins and a clean sheet against Pali and Santa Clarita.
